Okada Riders Petition National Youth Authority Over Police Harassment and Operational Challenges
The Motorcycle Courier Union of Ghana and the Concerned Delivery Riders Association of Ghana, led by their spokesperson, Mr. Carlos Adzie, have petitioned the National Youth Authority (NYA) to intervene in ongoing cases of police harassment and to address various challenges faced by motorcycle (Okada) riders across the country.
According to Mr. Adzie, the purpose of their engagement with the NYA is to express their grievances regarding police brutality and harassment, which they say have made their operations increasingly difficult. He appealed to the Authority to step in and investigate these issues to ensure the smooth operation of Okada businesses in Ghana.
Mr. Adzie further reminded the Authority that the President had, during his campaign, pledged to legalize Okada operations in the country, yet many riders continue to face obstacles. He highlighted key challenges faced by their members, including difficulties with DVLA registration, persistent police harassment, and unfair practices by app-based delivery companies that negatively impact their livelihoods.
Receiving the petition on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Osman Ayariga, Esq., the Deputy Chief Executive Officer in charge of Operations and Programs, Alhaji Inusah Mahama, assured the Okada associations of the Authority’s commitment to finding swift and lasting solutions.
Alhaji Mahama emphasized that the NYA remains concerned about the welfare of Ghanaian youth and will work to promote harmony between the Ghana Police Service and motorcycle riders. He added that the petition would be forwarded to the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment and treated as a matter of priority to ensure calm and cooperation within the sector.
